Announcing the New Lancaster Garden Club Scholarship Program!

We are thrilled to officially announce the launch of the brand-new Lancaster Garden Club (LGC) Scholarship Program!

Following approval at our January members meeting, our board has been hard at work finalizing the details. Lorraine made the official, in-person announcement at our members meeting on Sunday, March 15. We're excited to celebrate this exciting new chapter for the LGC!

This scholarship is a wonderful opportunity to further our mission and support our gardening community here in Lancaster.

This is Marion Larson from the Sterling Garden Club. Because you indicated an interest in our Winter Pruning Program (sorry it had to be cancelled), I'm writing to inform you of an upcoming SGC program on Thursday, January 16. The program is titled "Vegetable Gardening 101" and will be a lecture/slide program by Gretel Anspach, a Master Gardener. Please help us spread the word and attached flyer to interested friends, family or networks.

The Program begins at 10:30 and will end around noon. Location is the American Legion Hall, 32 School Street in Sterling.

We are looking forward to getting the Garden ready for Spring! We are in need of volunteers to spread bark mulch in our garden beds. If you have an hour or two to stop in to help, you are welcome to come by any day that fits your schedule before May 1^st.

There are wheelbarrows and small buckets behind the shed. You will see the pile of mulch on the right side of the driveway as you pull down. I have attached some photos of the beds that currently need to be mulched.

SPRINGFIELD GARDEN CLUB INVITES THE PUBLIC ON A

BUS TRIP TO THE NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDEN

SPRINGFIELD, MA — The Springfield Garden Club will host a bus trip to the New York Botanical Garden on Wednesday, April 27, 2022. The bus will leave Forest Park at 7:30 AM and will leave the NY Botanical Garden at 3:30 PM. Ticket prices are $63 for SGC members and $75 for non-members. The cost of the trip includes the bus trip and admission to the garden.

At that time in the spring, ephemerals and early blooming trees will make a breathtaking show amid and along the garden paths, waterfalls, and wetlands. The 1890s-vintage Haupt Conservatory will be filled with rare plants and orchids. The "greening up" will have begun at the Rose, Alpine Rock, and Herb Gardens. And, the always lovely 37-acre Conifer Collection is not to be missed. Of course, walking among the trunks of hundreds of century old trees in the Old-Growth Forest among the massive American beech, cherry, birch, tulip, and white ash evokes a sense of history and reverence. Spring delights will fill the Ladies' Border, The Irwin Perennial Garden, the Home Gardening Center, the Maureen K. Chilton Azalea Garden, and the Native Plant Garden.

The tour is self-guided and lunch is the responsibility of the attendee. Registration is on a first come first served basis and complete payment is due at time of registration.

SPRINGFIELD GARDEN CLUB HOSTS EXPERT ON CONSERVATION

“Worried about the planet? Change starts in your back yard!”

SPRINGFIELD, MA — The Springfield Garden Club will host a program presented by entomologist and author Doug Tallamy on Wednesday, June 16 at 7 PM. The event will be virtual and will be accessible via Zoom.

“The Springfield Garden Club has been encouraging our members, our neighbors and our city officials
to “Go Native” but many have been taking it on faith without a full understanding of why it is so crucial. By appealing to the widest audience possible, we hope to raise the awareness of the public as well as help them to be part of the solution,” explained Club president Beate Bolen.

Tallamy’s program will focus on the information in his book “Nature’s Best Hope” but will also touch on related areas. Recent headlines about global insect declines and three billion fewer birds in North America are a bleak reality check about how ineffective our current landscape designs have been at sustaining the plants and animals that sustain us. Such losses are not an option if we wish to continue our current standard of living on Planet Earth. The good news is that none of this is inevitable. Tallamy will discuss simple steps that each of us can- and must- take to reverse declining biodiversity and will explain why we, ourselves, are nature’s best hope. The program will include a question-and-answer segment.

Doug Tallamy is the T. A. Baker Professor of Agriculture in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware, where he has authored 104 research publications and has taught insect related courses for 40 years. Chief among his research goals is to better understand the many ways insects interact with plants and how such interactions determine the diversity of animal communities. Among his awards are the Garden Club of America Margaret Douglas Medal for Conservation and the Tom Dodd, Jr. Award of Excellence, the 2018 AHS B.Y. Morrison Communication Award and the 2019 Cynthia Westcott Scientific Writing Award.

Diane Lewis, M.D. is founder of non-profit organization The Great Healthy Yard Project and the author of its sister book, The Great Healthy Yard Project. Lewis is an internist and a nephrologist, licensed to practice medicine in New York State. Lewis has combined her knowledge of medicine with her love of the environment to become involved in a movement to protect our most valuable resources as well as our own health. As an environmental activist, she has embraced education as a means for implementing change. Lewis created The Great Healthy Yard Project to draw attention to a growing problem in our country that often times goes unnoticed. She has dedicated her work to teaching others how chemicals end up in our drinking water, and what affects they have on our bodies, as well as teaching alternative ways to take care of our lawns and gardens without harmful chemicals. A free lance journalist, Lewis has written oped pieces in regional and national papers, and speaks frequently.

"I have Tropical Milkweed seeds I'd be happy to share with club members. The Monarch Butterfly is on the endangered species list. One reason for their droppings population is the lack of food sources. This is one way to help their recovery." Greg Billings. Lancaster Garden Club members have been invited to attend the Annual Trust Fund Lecture of the Groton Garden Club.

As part of their promotion of the GCFM Native Plant Challenge, the Groton Garden Club is co-sponsoring their Annual Trust Fund Lecture with the Nashua River Watershed Association on Sunday, Feb 9 from 2-4 pm. Landscape architect Toby Wolf will explore ways that designed landscapes can be inspired by nature.

Treasurer

Overview

The Treasurer manages the financial activities of the club and keeps records via ongoing, monthly and annual processes. This role is year-round and frequently interacts with other members of the board and various chairpersons.

Ongoing – As needed

· Make deposits at Worker’s Credit Union
· Write checks for speakers and reimbursements
· Pay club bills (check or electronic)
· Maintain QuickBooks with applicable transactions and account coding
· Reconcile bank statements for checking and savings accounts in QuickBooks
· Participate in board meetings and provide financial reporting/information
· Maintain files (bank statements, copies of filings, etc.)
· Maintain petty cash (*Note- QuickBooks indicates there is $50 in the petty cash account, however cash was not provided by previous Treasurer. As such, this account has not been maintained at least since 30^th June 2018)

501 (c) 3 – Annual

· Submit 501 c 3 renewal to GCFM – Due 1^st October
· Complete 990N e-postcard to IRS (online) – Due 15^th November
· Complete/send Form PC, filing fee confirmation, and any supporting documentation to MA Attorney General’s Office – Due 15^th November

*Note in Spring 2019, forms were sent to IRS and MA Attorney General’s office to fulfill missing documentation and apply for retroactive reinstatement of the club’s non-profit status. As of 4^th June 2019, the IRS has not responded except by cashing the $600 user fee.

GCFM - Annual

· Pay annual insurance to GCFM – Due between 15^th March and 15^th April
· Pay annual dues to GCFM – Due before 1^st May

Plant Sale – Annual

· Provide cash boxes and small bills for giving change
· Deposit money from plant and merchandise sales, membership fees, etc.
· Report net revenue earned to the board
· Obtain gaming permit for raffle and pay appropriate taxes to Gaming Commission, if applicable

Other recurring bills - Annual

· PO box
· Tower Hill membership for the club – Due in the Spring
· Thayer Memorial Library donation for garden passes – Due in the Spring
· Church donation for use of hall – Due in the Spring/Summer
· GoDaddy web domain (Note-2 years was paid in Spring 2019, should not be due until 2021)
· Wild Apricot website fees – Due in the Spring
· QuickBooks Online (currently paid on a monthly basis)
